Skincare routines are important year-round, but the summer is a particularly good time to focus and protect your skin. The sun’s UV rays can damage your skin and cause serious issues like wrinkles, age spots, and skin cancer. Caring for your skin helps to keep it looking healthy and youthful. Here are some of the best skincare routines to practice this summer.
Cleansing
Cleansing is the first step of any great skincare routine and becomes especially important during the hot and muggy Virginia summer! Make sure to choose a cleanser that removes dirt, makeup, and excess oil without stripping your skin of its natural moisture. Avoid using makeup remover wipes, as these tend to strip the skin of its natural moisture. Be careful of sulfates and phthalates as these can irritate your skin, and don’t use a cleanser with coconut oil because this increases blackheads. Instead, opt for a gel-based cleanser for summertime use.
Moisturizing
Even those with oily skin need a daily moisturizer in the summer. After cleansing your skin, use a lightweight moisturizer to help seal in the moisture and to prevent your body from overproducing sebum. Look for moisturizers that are oil-free or non-comedogenic – that means they won’t clog pores. If your skin feels dry after cleansing, try using a face oil or serum for added hydration before applying the rest of your skincare products.
Protecting
Protecting your skin from the sun is essential during the summer months. The sun’s UV rays can damage your skin, causing wrinkles, age spots, and skin cancer as you get older. To protect yourself, use broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day – even when it’s cloudy or overcast outside. It’s best to apply SPF after your moisturizer has dried in order for it to provide the best barrier to block out UVA and UVB. If you will be at an outdoor event or going swimming, reapply every two hours to make sure you are protected. And don’t forget to wear protective clothing such as hats and sunglasses!
Eating Right
Eating right is an important part of any skincare routine. The food you eat can have a direct effect on your skin, so be sure to include plenty of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables in your diet. You should also drink plenty of water (60oz per day is ideal) as it helps keep skin hydrated and flushes out toxins from the body.
Exfoliating
Summertime leads to oily skin and more clogged pores. Warmer weather leads to more oil production, and the skin cells easily get clogged up. Oilier skin blocks your glands and can create an uneven texture or increased acne. Using a gentle facial scrub can help exfoliate the skin, clearing out the oil and giving your skin room to breathe.
