Who Is a Candidate for Chemical Peels?
Candidates for chemical peels are people who have unwanted, noticeable skin conditions such as wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, and hyperpigmentation. Candidates should be in overall good health, non-smokers, and free from any active infections.
Contraindications for chemical peels are active bacterial, viral, or fungal infections, a history of facial cancer, and inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis or dermatitis. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, we recommend waiting until after birth to seek chemical peel treatment.
What Happens During a Chemical Peel Treatment?
During your chemical peel treatment, a solution will be gently applied to your skin in multiple, even layers. Patients may experience a slight stinging sensation during the procedure, but this often disappears as soon as the solution settles on the face. During your recovery process, the solution will work to peel off the outermost layer of the skin, revealing fresh new skin free from sun damage, wrinkles, acne scars, and more. Multiple treatments may be needed to achieve desired results.

Like any skin treatment, chemical peels do come with risks. These risks can include:

How Can I Prepare for My Chemical Peel Treatment?
Preparing ahead of time for your chemical peel treatment can lead to a complication-free procedure and recovery. Consider doing the following before your chemical peel appointment:
- Wear sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily
- Quit smoking
- Stop the use of Retinol for one week before your chemical peel
- Stop the use of facial exfoliants
- Avoid AHA or BHA products
- Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun to decrease the chances of sunburn
What Is Recovery Like After a Chemical Peel?
Immediately after your treatment, you may begin to feel itching as your skin begins to shed. This, along with redness and patchiness, is a normal part of the chemical peel healing process. Within five to seven days, patients will begin to notice their skin peeling. After about two weeks, the skin should be completely healed, and patients can enjoy their new skin results for up to four to six weeks before needing a follow-up treatment to maintain their results.
