Skin Benefits of Vitamin C

Skin Benefits of Vitamin C

Did you know that the powerful ingredients in topical Vitamin C have been shown to prevent early aging, improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, prevent sun damage, and combat acne? Keep reading to learn why you should consider including a topical Vitamin C product in your skincare regimen from the experts at SomaSou.

What is topical Vitamin C?

You are most likely ingesting Vitamin C through your daily diet, but the beauty of topical Vitamin C serums is that you can ensure those nutrients are going directly on your skin for the best possible results. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that has been proven to protect against photoaging of the skin. Vitamin C is also a potent anti-inflammatory, which explains why the ingredient can help improve the appearance of acne.

What are the benefits of Vitamin C?

Now that you have a better understanding of what Vitamin C is, we can now discuss the many benefits this ingredient has on the skin:

  • Protects against UV-induced free radical damage
  • Boosts collagen production
  • Improves the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines
  • Helps prevent the breakdown of existing collagen
  • Reduces hyperpigmentation
  • Reduces inflammation, including acne
  • Provides hydration
  • It may help soothe sunburn and heal wounds

Who should use topical Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is a very safe product to use on all skin types. Very few people will experience adverse reactions to applying a topical Vitamin C serum to their skin. However, many studies have found that lower concentrations of Vitamin C are actually better for the skin. Any product that includes Vitamin C concentrations of 20% or more has been shown to cause some minor skin irritations. That is why we recommend looking for products that have between 10-20% concentration of Vitamin C.

How to use topical Vitamin C

You can easily start to incorporate topical Vitamin C into your skincare routine. Start by using a gentle cleanser. Then on a clean face, apply a few drops of Vitamin C serum to your face and neck. Continue on with the rest of your skincare routine by applying moisturizer and sunscreen.

When will I start to see results?

If you incorporate Vitamin C serums or products into your skincare routines, you can expect to see some of the results above in around six to twelve weeks. Typically it takes six weeks to see improved skin hydration and reduced hyperpigmentation. It takes around 12 weeks to see wrinkle reduction, which is around the same time it takes for new collagen to fully form.

Healthy Aging Explained

Healthy Aging Explained

Did you know that September is Healthy Aging Month? Healthy aging is an important lifestyle choice to ensure that you thrive as your most confident self. In honor of Healthy Aging Month, we are sharing some helpful tips to combat early aging. Keep reading to learn more!

What is Healthy Aging?

No one can turn back the clock on aging, but there are preventative measures you can take to ensure that your body, skin, and mental well-being stay strong for the duration of your life. Some factors are out of our control when it comes to aging, like our genetic makeup. However, there are many factors that are in our control, such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, taking care of our mental health, and of course, practicing effective skincare routines.

Treatment Options to Promote Healthy Aging

Many treatment options are available to help promote healthy aging for years to come. Keep reading to learn about some of our most popular healthy aging treatments.

Aging Hands and Neck

Over time, the collagen in our hands deteriorates, which can create accentuated veins and wrinkles on our hands. Similarly, aging and cumulative sun exposure can lead to permanent wrinkles and bands on our necks. Luckily, there are a variety of treatment options to help build back the volume lost in these areas and improve skin texture. Our most popular are dermal fillers, laser skin resurfacing, and medical-grade skincare that penetrates deeper into the skin layers for maximum effect.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles on the face are bound to happen to us all. We naturally lose elasticity and volume because we are not producing collage at the same rate as we used to. There are treatment and skincare options available to slow down or reverse fine lines and wrinkles that are beginning to form. Botox and fillers can provide immediate benefits, while laser skin treatments trigger collagen production for a longer-lasting effect.

Sun Damage

After many years of sun exposure, you may start to notice uneven skin pigmentation and changes in your skin texture. There are many treatments and skincare options available to help reduce pigmentation on your face, decolletage, or hands. During your consultation, we provide you with a customized treatment plan to address your sun damage. Popular treatments include Intense Pulse Light (IPL), chemical peels, and laser skin resurfacing. Remember to always follow and apply daily use of SPF.

Back to School Skincare Ideas

Summer is winding down, and part of your back-to-school checklist should include a facial to help unclog all those face and back pores that were aggravated by the sun, sweat, pool, ocean, and sunscreen. Most facials also include a blue LED treatment which helps kill surface bacteria and restore your natural skin glow.  We’ve highlighted some of our favorite treatments below.

Clinical Facial

Clinical facials are a great way to reset your skin after a long summer of sun exposure. Here are three we recommend:

  • Glycolic Gel Exfoliator: This is one of our favorite facials. In just 30 minutes, you can exfoliate and resurface your face to improve the overall appearance of your skin – without peeling or downtime. Plus, you can apply make-up and continue with everyday activities right away. Glycolic gel exfoliator facials can improve pigmentation and control acne, while softening and smoothing your skin. We recommend trying this type of clinical facial once per month.
  • Glycolic and Enzyme Resurfacing: This clinical facial combines the glycolic resurfacing gel facial with Skin Zyme, where proteolytic enzymes are mixed with glycolic acid as a milder option. This treatment is great for people with reactive skin. After about one hour of treatment, this facial can help boost hydration and repair damaged skin. Best of all, there is no downtime.
  • Brightening Advance Glycolic Treatment: Take glycolic treatment to the next level with this clinical facial that resurfaces and brightens the skin. With a one-hour treatment and no downtime, this facial includes a safe brightener with an advanced combination of ingredients, antioxidants and resurfacing agents.

Chemical Peel

A chemical peel will have your skin looking and feeling brand new before the school year. Check out some of our most popular chemical peel treatments below:

  • Refine Peel: Enjoy your chemical peel for up to one full year after three one-hour treatments. A Refine Peel can rejuvenate the skin and improve texture, pigmentation, acne, and fine lines. Recovery time does take about two to five days, so be sure to schedule this ahead of any end-of-summer or back-to-school events.
  • Transform Peel: Improve skin pigmentation and texture while rejuvenating your skin with a Transform Peel. This one-hour treatment is the most aggressive of the three Marini Peel Systems, but results can last up to one year after three treatments. Recovery time is about four to seven days, but this peel is an excellent solution to address pigmentation and advanced sun damage after a long summer outdoors.
  • Clarify Peel: Do you have acne-prone or oily skin? Then you’ll want to try a Clarify Peel before heading back to school. This treatment works great on darker skin types, plus recovery time is only two to five days. This is a serious solution for acne and rejuvenation, as the Clarify Peel dissolves oil to penetrate and clear follicles for maximum results.

The Difference Between Botox and Dermal Fillers

The Difference Between Botox and Dermal Fillers

If you are new to the Aesthetics world, you may have some questions about the difference between popular treatments like Botox and dermal fillers. While both cosmetic treatments are minimally invasive and are given through injections, there are some key differences in the benefits of Botox and dermal fillers. Keep reading to learn more from the professionals at SomaSou.

What is Botox?

Botox is a drug made from Clostridium Botulinum that is injected into the face or upper body. Botox works by temporarily relaxing or freezing the muscles. Botox is commonly used to temporarily smooth facial wrinkles and fine lines. It can also be used for medical treatments to help prevent excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), chronic migraines, and even overactive bladders. Common side effects after Botox treatment include pain, swelling or bruising at the injection site.

What is a Dermal Filler?

In contrast, dermal fillers are made of natural substances(hyaluronic acid)  that are injected beneath the surface of the skin to add volume and fullness to the face. Dermal fillers are designed to combat a variety of aging signs. Dermal fillers can help plump thinning lips, enhance shallow areas on the face, remove wrinkles under the eyes, soften the look of scars, or fill in static wrinkles from loss of collagen and elasticity in the skin. Common side effects after filler injections include pain, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. Treatments are non-invasive and results will last anywhere from six months to up to two years.

What are the Key Differences Between Botox and Dermal Fillers?

Botox and dermal fillers are both non-invasive treatments that are given through injections. However, there are some key differences between the two treatments. Botox relaxes muscles around the upper face, like the forehead and eyes and is short acting, usually wearing off after three to four months. Dermal fillers actually fill in or plump areas around the face that have lost volume and smoothness lasting six months to one year. Oftentimes, both Botox and dermal fillers can be used together in one treatment. Schedule your consultation with SomaSou’s Injector to create the best treatment plan for you.

Why Use Botox or Dermal Fillers?

As we age, our skin naturally loses collagen and elasticity. This can cause fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, thinning lips, and more. Botox and dermal fillers exist to help combat these signs of early aging in a non-invasive, non-surgical way. Botox and dermal fillers are used by millions of men and women around the world to prevent early aging. While they do carry some minor risks, both treatments are minimally invasive and considered safe when performed by a certified professional. Botox and dermal fillers are not recommended for women who are breastfeeding or pregnant.

How Botox Can Help Migraines

Botox Migraines

June is National Headache and Migraine Awareness Month. Do you suffer from chronic headaches or migraines? A chronic headache or migraine means you experience symptoms at least 15 days or more each month. These debilitating headaches can significantly affect your overall health and wellbeing. Luckily, there are many treatments available to chronic migraine sufferers that can alleviate the pain. One such treatment is Botox, an injectable drug that has been approved by the FDA to help treat chronic migraines.  Keep reading to learn more about how Botox can help alleviate your chronic migraines.

What is Botox?

Before we begin, let’s explain what Botox is first. Botox is an injectable drug made from a protein called Clostridium Botulinum. When Botox is injected into your body, usually your forehead, it blocks some chemical signals from reaching your nerves. This causes your muscles to experience temporary paralysis. Botox was discovered as a popular treatment to reduce facial wrinkles until researchers discovered the positive benefits of treating other medical conditions with it. Today, Botox is often used to treat other medical issues like neck spasms, eye twitching, overactive bladder, and yes – preventing chronic migraines.

Is Botox Safe?

Yes! Botox is safe. In 2010, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Botox for use to prevent chronic migraines. One caveat: you must go to an experienced and licensed healthcare professional for Botox treatment. Adverse side effects of Botox injections are typical when the treatment is not prepared according to FDA standards. So be sure to seek out a professional before starting Botox treatments.

How Does Botox Work to Prevent Migraines?

Now that you have a better understanding of what Botox is, here are the ways that Botox can help prevent chronic migraines. When injected into the forehead or upper body area, Botox will block the release of chemicals that transmit pain from a migraine. Botox can help reduce nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to lights, sounds, and smells caused by an oncoming migraine.

How Often Should I Get Botox?

It typically takes about two weeks or more to experience relief and additional Botox treatments have been proven to be more effective. Typically, Botox should be administered every three months to improve migraine symptoms without relapse. Talk to a medical professional to find the treatment plan that’s right for you.

Are There Side Effects to Botox?

Like most medical treatments, there are some potential side effects that you should be aware of before starting Botox. While complications and side effects are rare, you may experience:

  • Neck pain or stiffness at the injection site (the most common side effect)
  • A headache
  • Temporary muscle weakness
  • In extremely rare circumstances, you may experience vision changes, difficulty swallowing, or drooping eyelids

To reduce your risk of complications, be sure to see a certified professional before using Botox.
