We’ve all heard that applying a moisturizer daily to our skin is an essential step to a proper skincare routine. Have you ever wondered why? We are breaking down everything you need to know about moisturizers to keep your skin healthy and hydrated!

What is a Moisturizer?

Before we begin, let’s describe what a moisturizer actually is first. A moisturizer typically comes in the form of a lotion, cream, ointment or balm. Moisturizers work to hydrate the surface layers of your skin to help it stay hydrated. When applied properly, a moisturizer seals the skin to lock in important nutrients and moisture. Moisturizers can also act as a barrier from harmful irritants that can cause damage to your skin.

Benefits of Using a Moisturizer

Moisturizers are powerful products! Not only can they hydrate the skin and prevent dryness, but they can actually improve your skin’s barrier. Anti-aging moisturizers can improve overall skin texture while making skin appear firmer. Plus, moisturizers add essential nutrients back into the layers of your skin.

How Do Moisturizers Work?

Most moisturizers do one of two things: seal moisture within the top layers of your skin or restore moisture that has been lost. There are three kinds of moisturizers:

  • Emollients: These soften, smoothen and condition skin by filling in the gaps between skin cells or flakes with droplets of oil. An example is castor oil.
  • Occlusives: These create a barrier on top of the skin to reduce or physically block TEWL (transepidermal water loss). An example is petroleum jelly, like Vaseline.
  • Humectants: These pull water from deeper skin layers or from humid environmental conditions. An example is hyaluronic acid.

How to Use a Moisturizer

Moisturizers work best when applied to skin after it has been cleansed, so we recommend moisturizing after each time you wash your face. It’s also helpful to apply moisturizers when your skin is slightly damp, as they help to seal in moisture. To use a moisturizer, apply a pea-sized amount to your face and lightly rub it using circular motions. When it comes to a skincare routine, you should always cleanse, lightly exfoliate, then apply a moisturizer.

How Often to Moisturize

Now that you understand the importance of moisturizing, you may be wondering how often to complete this step. We recommend moisturizing twice per day: once in the morning and once at night. We also recommend that you moisturize in the morning before applying sunscreen or makeup. Plus, many moisturizers include an SPF already, which can help make your morning routine easier.
