If you are new to the Aesthetics world, you may have some questions about the difference between popular treatments like Botox and dermal fillers. While both cosmetic treatments are minimally invasive and are given through injections, there are some key differences in the benefits of Botox and dermal fillers. Keep reading to learn more from the professionals at SomaSou.

What is Botox?

Botox is a drug made from Clostridium Botulinum that is injected into the face or upper body. Botox works by temporarily relaxing or freezing the muscles. Botox is commonly used to temporarily smooth facial wrinkles and fine lines. It can also be used for medical treatments to help prevent excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), chronic migraines, and even overactive bladders. Common side effects after Botox treatment include pain, swelling or bruising at the injection site.

What is a Dermal Filler?

In contrast, dermal fillers are made of natural substances(hyaluronic acid)  that are injected beneath the surface of the skin to add volume and fullness to the face. Dermal fillers are designed to combat a variety of aging signs. Dermal fillers can help plump thinning lips, enhance shallow areas on the face, remove wrinkles under the eyes, soften the look of scars, or fill in static wrinkles from loss of collagen and elasticity in the skin. Common side effects after filler injections include pain, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. Treatments are non-invasive and results will last anywhere from six months to up to two years.

What are the Key Differences Between Botox and Dermal Fillers?

Botox and dermal fillers are both non-invasive treatments that are given through injections. However, there are some key differences between the two treatments. Botox relaxes muscles around the upper face, like the forehead and eyes and is short acting, usually wearing off after three to four months. Dermal fillers actually fill in or plump areas around the face that have lost volume and smoothness lasting six months to one year. Oftentimes, both Botox and dermal fillers can be used together in one treatment. Schedule your consultation with SomaSou’s Injector to create the best treatment plan for you.

Why Use Botox or Dermal Fillers?

As we age, our skin naturally loses collagen and elasticity. This can cause fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, thinning lips, and more. Botox and dermal fillers exist to help combat these signs of early aging in a non-invasive, non-surgical way. Botox and dermal fillers are used by millions of men and women around the world to prevent early aging. While they do carry some minor risks, both treatments are minimally invasive and considered safe when performed by a certified professional. Botox and dermal fillers are not recommended for women who are breastfeeding or pregnant.
